Roof Cleaning

Have you ever wondered where those awful-looking stains on your roof came from and why they are so bad on certain sides? Those stains are actually a living plant form (Gloeocapsa magma). This algae is feeding on the limestone filler used to add weight to asphalt shingles. The reason it is more prominent on the north side and shaded areas of your roof is because these areas get the least amount of sunlight. Lack of sunlight means moisture from morning dew and rain remain on these areas longer, creating the perfect environment for maximum growth.

Should you be concerned about it? Yes, besides being an eye sore this algae has a root system and over time it will shorten the life of your shingles by dislodging the granules that protect and give your shingles color.

We clean roof shingles using a "no pressure" approach. The shingle's granules are its protection. The worst thing to do is to use pressure to clean them because it will blow the granules off of the shingle, severely shortening the life of the shingle.

Our "soft washing" method uses a combination of cleaners, algae-cides and soaps to kill the algae at its roots. Our custom solutions are based on the Asphalt Shingle Manufactures Association's recommendations.

Below are just a few examples of our work.

While on your roof I will look for common problems such as missing or broken shingles, "dry rot" around plumbing vent boots, skylights, clogged dryer vents, and exhaust fan vent cover obstructions, etc. I will also trim limbs that are touching the roof and causing damage. This is standard to a point, if there will be an extra cost for excessive labor it will be stated up front. Gutters are always cleaned out and then flushed. I also inspect them for proper function.
